Analysis of slope failures in submarine canyon heads: An example from the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Gaudin, Mathieu; Berne, Serge; Canals, Miquel; Urgeles, Roger; Lafuerza, Sara.
To improve understanding of evolution of submarine canyons, a three-dimensional slope-stability model is applied to Bourcart Canyon in the western Gulf of Lions in the Mediterranean Sea. The model builds on previous work by Chen and others, and it uses the upper bound theorem of plasticity to calculate the factor of safety of a kinematically admissible failing mass. Examples of three-dimensional failure surfaces documented in the literature were used to test the model formulation. Model application to Bourcart Canyon employed the results of a detailed stratigraphic analyses based on data acquired by swath bathymetry, sub-bottom profiling, high-resolution seismic reflection surveys, and piston coring. The sediment layers were also characterized using...

Assessing the risk of vulnerable species exposure to deepwater trawl fisheries: the case of orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus to the west of Ireland and Britain ArchiMer
Dransfeld, Leonie; Gerritsen, Hans D.; Hareide, Nils R.; Lorance, Pascal.
With slow growth rates, late maturity and a high maximum age of 100 years or more, orange roughy can be classified as a vulnerable deepwater fish species that can only sustain low rates of exploitation. Historical patterns of exploitation associated with this species suggest that it is currently not possible to manage its fisheries in the Northeast Atlantic sustainably, and the total allowable catch for orange roughy has been gradually reduced to zero for European fisheries since 2010. Orange roughy to the west of Ireland and Britain occurs on distinct bathymetric features (seamounts, hills and canyons) as well as on flat ground along the continental slope. Productivity-susceptibility analysis (PSA) was performed to evaluate the biological vulnerability of...

Biweekly current oscillations on the continental slope of the Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer
Vangriesheim, Annick; Treguier, Anne-marie; Andre, Gael.
Current meter measurements have been carried out for 3 years on the continental slope of the Gulf of Guinea, near 7.5 degrees S off the Angola coast. Currents in a water depth of 1300 m over the continental slope show a remarkable biweekly oscillation, bottom intensified, and with currents oriented nearly parallel to the isobaths. With a peak-to-peak amplitude reaching 20-30 cm s(-1) at 30 in above the bottom, this signal is the most energetic at sub-inertial frequencies. Simultaneous measurements deeper on the continental rise (in a water depth of 4000 m) show a more complex signal dominated by lower frequencies, and with less clear polarization. Simple linear topographic wave theories are compared to the observations. A combination of coastal trapped...

Instabilities and deformation in the sedimentary cover on the upper slope of the southern Aquitaine continental margin, north of the Capbreton canyon (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Gonthier, E; Cirac, P; Faugeres, J; Gaudin, Mathieu; Cremer, M; Bourillet, Jean-francois.
Acoustic and core data have recently been collected on the shelf break and the upper part of the slope of the south Aquitaine continental margin. They reveal the major role played by mass-flow gravity processes in deposit erosion and redistribution, modelling of the sea-bed, and transfer of sediment toward the deep-sea. The study region is bounded in the south by the Capbreton canyon. The northern area, which shows a smooth morphology, is characterised by small-scale deformations due to sediment creep or low-amplitude slide processes. The deformations are associated with mini listric-like faults that bound packets of sediments in which the deposit geometry is typical of constructional sediment waves. These sediment waves result from the interaction of...

Large-scale distribution of a deep-sea megafauna community along Mediterranean trawlable grounds ArchiMer
Fernandez-arcaya, Ulla; Bitetto, Isabella; Esteban, Antonio; Farriols, M. Teresa; García-ruiz, Cristina; Gil De Sola, Luis; Guijarro, Beatriz; Jadaud, Angelique; Kavadas, Stefanos; Lembo, Giuseppe; Milisenda, Giacomo; Maina, Irida; Petovic, Slavica; Sion, Letizia; Vaz, Sandrine; Massutí, Enric.
The large-scale distribution pattern of megafauna communities along the Mediterranean middle slope was explored. The study was conducted between 500 and 800 m depth where deep-water fishery occurs. Although community studies carried out deeper than 500 m are partly available for some geographic areas, few large-scale comparative studies have been carried out. Within the framework of the MEDITS survey programme, we compared the megafauna community structure in ten geographical sub-areas (GSAs) along the Mediterranean coasts. Additionally, the spatial distribution of fishing was analysed using vessel monitoring by satellite information. Overall, the community showed a significant difference between sub-areas, with a decreasing eastward pattern in abundance...

Mercury in organisms from the Northwestern Mediterranean slope: Importance of food sources ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Fabri, Marie-claire; Bouchoucha, Marc; Brach-papa, Christophe; Chavanon, Fabienne; Jadaud, Angelique; Knoery, Joel; Marco-miralles, Francoise; Cossa, D..
Mercury (Hg) is a global threat for marine ecosystems, especially within the Mediterranean Sea. The concern is higher for deep-sea organisms, as the Hg concentration in their tissues is commonly high. To assess the influence of food supply at two trophic levels, total Hg concentrations and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were determined in 7 species (4 teleosts, 2 sharks, and 1 crustacean) sampled on the upper part of the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea), at depths between 284 and 816 m. Mean Hg concentrations ranged from 1.30 ± 0.61 to 7.13 ± 7.09 μg g− 1 dry mass, with maximum values observed for small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula. For all species except blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou, Hg...

Oceanographic conditions at the southern end of the argentine continental slope OceanDocs
Guerrero, R.A.; Baldoni, A.G.; Benavides, H.R..
The characteristics of the upper Antartic Intermediate water (AAIW) entering the Southern Atlantic are described on the base of oceanographic data collected from four late austral winters (1978-1980-1994-1995). The upper 500 meters regime along the shelf break and around Malvinas Islands (48° to 55° S) is analyzed. In particular, the 1994 horizontal distribution of temperature, salinity and density was mapped in order to show the extreme winter pattern of these parameters. Three salinity sections crossing the water flow direction in the Malvinas Channel (South to the islands) were selected to describe the vertical stratification 1995 and 1995. Horizontal and vertical distribution of chlorophyll a from the 1995 cruise is presented as reference data,...

Overpressure within upper continental slope sediments from CPTU data, Gulf of Lion, NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lafuerza, S.; Sultan, Nabil; Canals, M.; Frigola, J.; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Galavazi, M.; Sierro, F. J..
Data from in situ piezocone tests (CPTU) and laboratory analyses are utilized for the interpretation of the stress history of Quaternary sedimentary sequences in the upper continental slope of the Gulf of Lion, northwestern Mediterranean Sea. A CPTU based preconsolidation pressure profile referenced to the current effective stress indicates that the deposit is underconsolidated from 12 meters below the seafloor (mbsf) down to at least 150 mbsf. Excess pore pressure below 12 mbsf is further supported by results from oedometer and dissipation tests. Subseafloor pockmarks and indications of free gas in seismic reflection profiles reveal four main overpressure sources (SI-SIV) with overpressure ratios > 0.3 at subseafloor depths coinciding with levels where...

Structure du peuplement ichtyologique du talus continental à l'ouest des iles britanniques et impact de la pêche ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal.
A fisrt survey designed to estimate the impact of the fishery on the multispecific population of the slope has been carried out from June 26th to July 20th 1996 on board of the French R/V Thalassa. This survey took place West of Scotland, between 55 degrees and 57 degrees of latitude North, on an area from where data before exploitation were available and where fishing activity was intensive since the 90's. On this area, the analysis of the species composition by haul only showed that the fish assemblage was structured according to depth. Such a conclusion was not new. However, the positioning of the hauls on two smaller sectors characterized by different slopes and bottoms, and probably by a lesser fishing intensity on the one with rougher bottom did not...

Variability in natural behaviour, and observed reactions to an ROV, by mid-slope fish species ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena.
The behaviour of eight large benthopelagic fish taxa was analysed using video records collected with an ROV on the mid-slope of the Bay of Biscay. The studied species were roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), deep-sea scorpionfish (Trachyscorpia cristulata echinata), and black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo), as well as individuals belonging to the families Alepocephalidae, Chimaeridae, and Scyliorhinidae, and to the order Squaliformes. Some of the observed fish were grouped at the family taxonomical level due to visual identification to species being unreliable. Assumed natural (undisturbed) behaviour was categorised in terms of (i) body position with respect to the bottom sea floor, (ii) locomotion and...

Variability of PCB burden in 5 fish and sharks species of the French Mediterranean continental slope ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Fabri, Marie-claire; Miralles, Francoise Marco; Dufour, Jean-louis; Elleboode, Romain; Sevin, Karine; Mahe, Kelig; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Despite being generally located far from contamination sources, deep marine ecosystems are impacted by chemicals like PCB. The PCB contamination in five fish and shark species collected in the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) was measured, with a special focus on intra- and interspecific variability and on the driving factors. Significant differences occurred between species. Higher values were measured in Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus and Helicolenus dactylopterus and lower values in Phycis blennoides and Lepidorhombus boscii. These differences might be explained by specific abilities to accumulate and eliminate contaminant, mostly through cytochrome P450 pathway. Interindividual variation was also high and no...
